Your Dog Trainer

The risk is NOT worth the reward. Far too many dogs become dog aggressive or reactive, after having a bad experience with another dog. Being attacked or severely overwhelmed makes them defensive toward other canines.

I advise all owners to never allow their pet to meet dogs on-leash when on walks. Just say “NO”. Saying no does not make you a mean pet parent or horrible human being. If a stranger get offended, that’s not your problem. You are advocating and doing the right thing for your dog. Period.

I know there are many people who will say that they let their dog interact with other dogs on walks with no problem. That’s terrific, but it’s not appropriate for every dog. Not every dog will feel comfortable being restrained at the end of a leash and having another dog rush up and meet them face-to-face. That is a recipe for disaster and a one way ticket to The People’s Court.

There is a time and place for everything. The time and place for your dog to socialize and play with other dogs is NOT on-leash when on walks. Save socialization for proper play sessions. Use the walk as mental and physical exercise, a training opportunity and a bonding experience with your dog.

This simple step will save countless dogs and owners needless heartache and stress.

If socialization is your goal, here is a free Socialization Checklist: srdogtraining.com/puppy-socialization-checklist/
